A LA MEXICANA

FOUNDER & CURATOR

2019

As part of my MA at London College of Fashion, I founded and curated A la Mexicana, an exhibition showcasing ethical collaborations between Mexican designers and artisans. The curatorial work was led by me with support from Estela Ivonné, founder of Hilando Historias.

The show featured five brands (Andrea Velasco, Mujeres Sembrando la Vida, Fábrica Social, Estela Ivonné, and 1/8 Takamura) and was delivered in partnership with Hilando Historias, Impacto NGO, and the Mexican Embassy in the UK. I developed a PR plan to secure sponsorship from the Embassy and Impacto NGO, and a communications strategy that led to coverage in Elle México, El Universal Newsletter, and UAL News, as well as extensive social media reach.

The exhibition ran from July 2–7, attracting 300+ visitors and generating ~99 social posts (≈7.5K likes and 470 comments). An opening event featured a panel on cultural appropriation with four specialists: Dr. Serkan Delice (UAL), Dr. Diana Albarrán González (Auckland University of Technology), Adriana Aguerrebere Bustos (Impacto NGO), and artisan María Méndez Rodríguez from Aguacatenango, Chiapas. The panel brought together both academic and practitioner perspectives.

Thanks to Impacto NGO’s sponsorship, two artisans were brought to London to offer live demonstrations of their techniques, helping visitors connect directly with the production process. This project became the foundation of my dissertation, which evaluated whether exhibition formats can effectively communicate production processes and influence consumer decision-making. It was awarded Distinction.
